What is the future of “Lexus,” which will convert all its vehicles to EVs in 2035? We asked Toyota’s in-house company president.

Tsuyoshi Watanabe, President of Toyota Motor Corporation’s Lexus International, Inc.

According to Newswitch on September 24, Toyota Motor Corporation plans to convert all new vehicles sold under its luxury car brand “Lexus” to electric vehicles (EV) by 2035. The company also recently revealed a new goal to decarbonize all stages of its cars from manufacturing to driving in the same year. We asked Tsuyoshi Watanabe, President of Lexus International, an in-house company appointed in March, about the direction Lexus, a pioneer in EVs and decarbonization at Toyota, is taking.

-How do you see the market? I feel that major changes are taking place in the environment. In this context, what Lexus should do is to decarbonize. Since assuming the presidency, I have had conversations with the heads of dealerships and customers in various regions. Since assuming the presidency, I have been talking with top dealers and customers in various regions, and they are becoming more and more interested in how to use and enjoy their cars. We need to move from discussions on what we can offer to new values, rather than just making cars.

-China, in particular, is the center of the EV market, and it is necessary to respond quickly to changes in the market. China is now a country where interests and concerns change after 2-3 months. The Chinese market is very large, and we must protect it as we have in the past. Lexus, as a global brand, was based on balanced product development, but honestly speaking, we do not think this approach will work in China. If we do not focus more on car manufacturing and product development in China, we will not be able to keep up with changes in the market.

Is the current direction to separate the domestic-only development system? We have to think about that as well. It will not necessarily be enough to plan only for the export of finished vehicles.

In 2014, Lexus plans to launch a next-generation EV with a renewed platform (car body) and software infrastructure. I feel the potential and expandability of EV technology. The flavor of the Lexus brand, such as detailed manufacturing and ride comfort as a car, will be inherited and evolved no matter what kind of car structure and production method is used. We will be taking on the challenge of a structure that is completely different from anything we have done before, but we must give it our all. What is the impact of the “GIGACAST” production method, which divides the body structure into three parts? The GIGACAST production method, which divides the body structure into three parts, has had a significant impact on Lexus. It is very rational. The balance of performance, strength, and rigidity when modularized structures are joined to form a single car is a difficult point, but as an engineer, I am very interested in it.
