Lightning-only gadgets that will no longer work with the new USB-C iPhone 15
According to ITmedia on September 29, the “iPhone 15” series released by Apple finally has a USB Type-C connection port instead of Lightning. This change has been eagerly awaited for some time, as it offers many advantages such as sharing charging cables with other devices and a wider choice of peripherals. However, for many users, there is also a demerit in that they will no longer be able to use peripherals that are designed for Lightning connection.
What about peripherals that plug directly into the Lightning port?
Lightning is Apple’s proprietary standard that was introduced with the iPhone 5, released in 2012, as the successor to the existing 30-pin dock connector. It is characterized by its small size, the fact that there are no two sides to the connector, and the fact that it can be connected in either direction. In addition, a number of peripherals that can be used by connecting directly to the Lightning port have also been introduced. For example, Apple’s genuine cables. For example, the VGA Adapter, Digital AV Adapter, USB Camera Adapter, USB 3 Camera Adapter, and SD Card Camera Reader can be used to read photos stored on SD memory cards and directly connect to cameras.
These cannot be used with the iPhone 15 series with USB Type-C, and a separate adapter must be purchased. However, Apple’s genuine products are guaranteed to be of high quality, but at a higher price. It is not a good idea to buy a new adapter just for the sake of buying a new one. There are many other gadgets that are Lightning-only. Many of them will not work with the iPhone 15 series. Here are some examples
Earphones Earphones dedicated for the Lightning port, including Apple’s genuine EarPods, are available from various companies. Portable Amplifiers There are small DACs that can be plugged directly into the Lightning port of an iPhone to enjoy high-quality music.
Mobile battery A type of mobile battery that can be charged by plugging directly into the Lightning port is very convenient, eliminating the need for a separate cable. External microphone By connecting a receiver to the Lightning port of an iPhone, high-quality audio can be recorded as it is. The Hollyland product mentioned as an example has a Lightning-only model.
FM transmitter If you often drive a car that does not support CarPlay or Bluetooth, you may want to use a transmitter that can send audio to the FM radio. There are products that can be used with a Lightning connection.
USB flash drives USB flash drives with both Lightning and common USB Type-A connectivity are useful for exchanging data between the iPhone and a PC, but in the future they will be used simply as USB flash drives.
Game Controller There is a surprisingly high demand for game controller-type peripherals that can be inserted into the iPhone and played like a portable game console, and several companies have released products. Cameras The Insta360 ONE (released in 2017), the first of the current newest “Insta360 X3” series, is a 360-degree camera with a Lightning connection only.
