Fisheries Exports Shift from Dependence on China; Ruling and Opposition Parties Demand Thorough Support

Minister of Agriculture Nomura gives an answer at a joint session of the Upper House’s Economy, Trade, and Industry Committee and the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries Committee on the afternoon of September 8.

On August 8, following the morning session of the House of Representatives, the Upper House of the Diet held a joint meeting of the Economy, Trade and Industry Committee and the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Committee to review the discharge of treated water from TEPCO’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean. Agriculture Minister Tetsuro Nomura stated that he aims to develop export destinations for fishery products and shift away from the current dependence on the Chinese market. The lawmakers from the ruling and opposition parties called for thorough support for the fisheries industry, which is feared to have been damaged by harmful rumors.

China’s total suspension of imports of Japanese marine products in response to the release has caused anxiety among fishery businesses throughout Japan. Mr. Nomura mentioned that “there is a risk if (export destinations) are heavily weighted toward one country. He cited the U.S., Taiwan, Indonesia, and Malaysia as promising alternative markets, explaining that the company will work to expand its exports to these countries.
