October 2, Forbes JAPAN Toyota has been a major player in the California auto market for decades. According to the California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA), Toyota dominated the state’s auto market in the second quarter of 2017 (April to June), selling slightly less than 90,000 new vehicles. Tesla, on the other hand, sold about 4,300 new vehicles, which was only margin of error. The situation changes drastically when we turn the clock forward to the second quarter of 2023. Toyota’s new car sales fell by more than 20,000 units compared to 2017, to 67,482 units in the second quarter of 2023. In contrast, Tesla’s new car sales jumped to 69,212 units, a real 1515% increase compared to the second quarter of 2017. According to CNCDA, Tesla’s Model Y became the best-selling vehicle in the California new car market. This is what one might call a historic market shift. And this shift is not just happening in California, but across the United States.
