According to the October 4 Yomiuri Shimbun, “Japanese Whiskey Stories Fukuoka 2023,” the first event planned by bartenders in Fukuoka and Saga to support domestic whiskey, which is experiencing a boom both in Japan and abroad, will be held at the Denki Building Kyosokan in Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City on October 8. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the construction of Japan’s first distillery in Osaka in 1923. demand for domestically produced whiskey peaked in the early 1980s and has been stagnant, but now shipments, including exports, continue to grow, driven by the popularity of highballs and the NHK TV series “Massan” broadcast from 2014 to 2015.

According to the National Tax Agency, the number of distilleries licensed to produce whiskey doubled in 10 years to 157 as of FY 2009. In addition, 30 new distilleries obtained licenses in 2010. Of these, about 100 distilleries are believed to be actually in operation, approaching the 160 distilleries in Scotland, the home of whisky.
