According to OVO on September 22, the reputation of domestic whiskey has been growing worldwide in recent years. Scotch, Irish, American, and Canadian whiskies, plus “Japanese whisky,” have come to be known as the “world’s five major whiskies. Suntory’s single malt whiskeys “Yamazaki” and “Hakushu” have been a major factor in the rise of Japanese whiskey’s reputation. Suntory has positioned this year as the “100th Anniversary of Suntory Whisky,” marking 100 years since 1923, when it began construction of the Yamazaki Distillery, which gave birth to Yamazaki, in the suburbs of Kyoto. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Hakushu Distillery (Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture), which was completed in 1973.
