Kitami City, Hokkaido: 964 million yen in hometown tax payments in September, more than 7 times the amount of the previous year
According to the Hokkaido Shimbun on October 4, [Kitami] Kitami City’s hometown tax donations in September increased 7.4 times over the same month last year to 964 million yen. With the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications tightening the rules for calculating expenses from October, many municipalities are raising the amount of donations from October, and it is believed that there was a last-minute rush. The suspension of imports of Japanese fishery products by China has also boosted the momentum to support fishermen, and the popularity of scallops, a specialty of the city, has also contributed to the increase.
According to the city, donations in the last fiscal year totaled 2.646 billion yen, the eighth largest in Hokkaido. The total for the five-month period from April to August this year was 423 million yen, but on September 30, 213 million yen was collected on one day alone. The city is characterized by the large number of donations from the Tokyo metropolitan area, and frozen scallops from Tokoro-grown scallops are said to be a particularly popular return gift that has boosted the city’s donation amount.
