According to Wedge on October 5, Taiwan’s first “domestically built submarine” was unveiled for the first time at the end of September, and President Tsai Ing-wen herself attended the ceremony to unveil the vessel. Taiwan has been secretly planning to build a submarine for the past seven years, and will begin full-scale construction in 2020. President Tsai was proud of the “completion” of the submarine, saying that it was a “mission impossible. The submarine, which is attracting attention as a countermeasure to enable early warning and counterattack against China’s maritime expansion and invasion of Taiwan, has been named “Kaikun. The construction of Taiwan’s “homegrown submarine,” with the under-the-sea cooperation of an “international consortium” including the United States, Britain, and Australia, may be seen as a microcosm of the Taiwan Strait issue, which has become globalized in tandem with China’s hard-line stance.
